IRobot lands $3.7M customized robot order

By Mass High Tech Staff

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded iRobot Corp. a $3.7 million order to provide 17 customized PackBot Man Transportable Robotic System robots, due by the end of January next year.

The order is part of an existing Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity contract that could result in up to $264 million in robots, parts, services and training. With this latest order, NAVSEA has placed about $102 million in orders.

The customized MTRS robots are built to detect and disable explosive devices and are designed similar to the company’s PackBot 500 with EOD Kit. The PackBot is a rugged military robot designed to be light enough to be carried by a single soldier. The robot’s interchangeable, modular payloads allow soldiers to adapt it for multiple mission requirements.

Earlier this month, iRobot (Nasdaq: IRBT) reported it had landed a $2.1 million order from the U.S. Army for spare parts and repairs for the PackBot military robot. The order is the first under the five-year, $200 million IQID deal the company iRobot recently received from the Army for military robots, similar to the NAVSEA deal.

IRobot reported a 2007 net income of $9.1 million on revenue of $249.1 million.
